Pruning, fertilizing, and caring for Photonia: How to keep your Devil's Dream® in top form

Devil's Dream® is an evergreen, winter-hardy Photonia whose leaves shine beautifully in red during spring and summer. As the late summer progresses, the striking color transforms into a glossy green, adorning your garden even in the cold season. Its strong, dense growth and quick regrowth after pruning make this hedge plant the ideal garden resident, especially when a plant that thrives in the south-facing position is required. Photonia Devil's Dream® captivates not only with its fiery hue but also loves warm temperatures. A spot in full sun or sunny partial shade is ideal. By the way, it also works as a colorful container plant on the terrace and balcony.

Are you looking for a fast-growing hedge that serves as an eye-catcher and provides protection at the same time? By considering a few things in Photonia care, the Devil's Dream® quickly grows into a dense, compact privacy screen. The Devil's Dream® is my new favorite among hedge beauties because it not only looks impressive, but also offers real value. This variety is characterized by its dense and compact growth habit, which is perfect for creating a hedge. The dark green leaves create a beautiful contrast with the bright red berries that appear in autumn, bringing color and life to the garden. What truly sets the Devil's Dream® apart is its resilience against diseases and pests. It is extremely robust and has low demands on soil and maintenance. This means less effort and more time to enjoy the garden. Moreover, the Devil's Dream® also provides ecological value. The basics of pruning the Photinia Devil’s Dream®

It is best to prune the Photinia Devil's Dream® after flowering in June/July. This also coincides with the end of the breeding and nesting season, which starts in April and lasts until mid-June. Hedge trimming is prohibited during this period. If you still decide to use the shears, it can be costly: In some federal states, fines of up to 15,000 euros can be imposed.

Would you like a little more?

How you prune your Photinia depends on whether it has already reached the desired size and density or if you just want to maintain its shape. If your Photinia is still on its way to becoming a fully grown hedge, you should guide it in the right direction with regular training cuts. To create a dense privacy screen, trim the current growth at the top and sides by 10 to 15 centimeters. This ensures that Devil's Dream® branches evenly all the way to the top. And here's an expert tip when it comes to pruning Photinia: Make sure that the hedge is wider at the bottom than at the top. This prevents the lower leaves from being too shaded.

If your Photinia hedge has achieved the perfect shape and height, you can take a more relaxed approach. In the future, one to two maintenance cuts per year will be sufficient. These cuts will ensure that the shape is maintained. Additionally, pruning the Photinia will promote the vibrant red leaves. To enjoy a fiery display of leaves every year, follow these steps:

Once hedge trimming is allowed, cut off all branches that protrude from the basic shape. If you want to trim the Photinia perfectly, make the cut just above the outward-facing leaf bud. Always make sure to maintain a trapezoidal shape (narrower at the top than at the bottom). Some people use a stretched string as a guide to mark the desired shape.

f you fertilize your Photinia and the conditions are right, it is possible that your hedge will grow so vigorously that it could tolerate a second trimming. Feel free to do another round of cutting on your Photinia, but only until August, as your Devil's Dream® needs pruning rest in the autumn.

More power at the right time: Fertilizing Photinia made easy

Before trimming your Photinia, fertilizing comes first because if you want it to grow big and strong, it needs to take in the right nutrients. This applies to plants as well. Regular fertilizer applications are one of the conditions for healthy and lush growth. Wondering when you should fertilize your Photinia? Our tip: in spring! That's when Photinia Devil's Dream® starts to sprout and needs nutrients to form leaves. Since the line between too much and too little is narrow, make it easy for yourself and opt for a slow-release or long-lasting fertilizer. This type of fertilizer is the right choice for your Photinia if you want to have little work but much joy with your Photinia hedge.
